COOLEY KICKHAMS…………1-15
ST MARYS………………………1-8

Cooley Kickhams got their Avonmore Senior Championship Group 2 campaign off to a winning start then they enjoyed a comfortable victory over St Marys in Haggardstown on Saturday evening.

Cooley got off to a dream start with a brilliant goal by Aoghan McGuinness in the opening minutes as the wing forward ran from the half way line, exchanging passes with MJ Hanlon before shooting home.

St Marys hit back quickly with two points from Alan Kirk, but Cooley restored their three point cushion with scores from Jason Long and Brian White (free).  Richard Brennan then scored a great point after bursting through from half back to make it 1-3 to 0-2.

John Kane and Patrick Sheelan then cancelled out points from Brian McCoy and Ronan Carroll to lead by 1-5 to 0-4. However, St Marys had the final say of the half with two scores from Carroll and one from McCoy to trail by just 1-5 to 0-7 at the break.

After the break the peninsula side began to justify their favourites tag as the second half proved mostly one-way traffic with Sean O'Neill continuing to dominate in midfield and Brian White showing his class up front.

Two quick points from White (1 free) and a Patrick Sheelan free put Cooley four points up and they never looked back, with the Ardee men hampered by the loss of Ronan Carroll, Paul Malone and Alan McKenny to injury.

St Marys struggled to get anything out of the Cooley defence with Conor McGuinness and Frank Murphy impressive.  Brian White set up Jason and Gavin Long for two more points before White himself converted another long range free.

Richard Brennan then scored a good point before St Marys registered their first scores of the half with a goal from sub Shane McCoy and a point from Mark Gorman in the dying minutes to cut the margin at the end to seven points.

Cooley Kickhams v Mattock Rangers PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 May 2010 01:30

Cardinal O'Donnell Cup 08/05/10
Fr. McEvoy Park

Cooley remain pointless at the foot of division 1 after Saturday evenings defeat at the hands of Mattock Rangers. The Kickhams will surely be wondering how they let this game slip from their grasp after dominating the entire first half yet turning over all square at 0-7 to 1-4.The home team started brightly scoring 3points inside the first ten minutes and playing some nice football in the process, however they were caught with a sucker punch when Mattock scored a goal on the counter. This score seemed to spur the home side on as they again took command on the scoreboard, but they were to rue two gilt edged goal chances when Neill Gallagher popped up on the end of two good moves to firstly blast one over the bar & the second chance came crashing back off the crossbar.

Mattock finished the half in a flurry with 3 points in as many minutes with two of them coming in injury time. A few positional switches by the Collon men ensured the second half was more evenly balanced in possession terms. Throughout this half it was score for score and with the game entering its final minutes Cooley held a one point lead and looked like they would go on to win. This was not to be the outcome as Mattock added 3 very late points to stay top of the division. The Kickhams will be glad to see Sean O'Neill back in the colours as this was Sean's first outing for the Club this season.Best for Cooley were Brian White who put in a good performance in midfield & Frank Murphy gave a sound display in defence.

Cooley lined out as follows:1 Seamus Quigley 2 Frank Murphy 3 John Kane 4 P.J.McGivern 5 Alan Page 6 Conor McGuinness 7 Richard Brennan(0-1)  8 Sean O'Neill 9 Brian White(0-7,2f,1/45) 10 Sean Donnelly 11 Patrick Sheelan(0-1f) 12 Ronan Woods 13 Sean McDonald 14 Neill Gallagher(0-1) 15 Conor Rafferty(0-1) Subs used Aoghain McGuinness for R.Woods & Declan McGuinness for S.McDonald.

Cooley v Clans PDF Print E-mail

Cardinal O' Donnell 29/04/10
Clan na Gael Park

Cooley Kickhams remain pointless after two rounds of the Senior league after suffering a second defeat at the hands of Clan na Gaels in Dundalk. The decisive score came in the first half in the form of a Clans goal and helped them to a lead of 1-5 to 0-7. This was a typical Cooley-Clans clash which was riddled with frees throughout with half of the total scores coming from free kicks. The match would be best described as poor fare although the Clans will feel happy with their start to the league. Tommy McEntaggart was the referee and was certainly kept busy as some of the tackles put in were over zealous. The second half continued with the Clans in the ascendancy scoring two quick points to assume control.

From that point on the teams traded points and late in the game it looked like Brian White had rescued a share of the spoils for the Kickhams, however the hosts finished the game in a flurry with three poined frees to win on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-12. The Kickhams won't be pressing any alarm buttons just yet as they were short a number of regulars for this encounter.

Cooley mentors are extremely annoyed at having lost another player to a serious injury. Keith White suffered a serious facial injury in an off the ball incident and had to be removed to hospital where he is receiving treatment for a broken jaw. The news on the young player who had recently joined the Louth panel is not good as he will be out of action for at least 3 months.

Cooley lined out as follows:
1 Seamus Quigley 2 Eddie Moley 3 John Kane 4 Antoin Watters 5 Frank Murphy 6 Alan Page 7 Richard Brennan 8 Conor McGuinness 9 Keith White 10 Cormac Watters 11 Patrick Sheelan(0-3,2f) 12 P.J. McGivern(0-1) 13 Sean McDonald(0-2) 14 Garoid Clarke 15 Brian White(0-6,3f) Subs used were Declan McGuinness for G. Clarke, Ronan Woods for C. Watters & Neil Gallagher for K. White (inj)

Cooley Kickhams doubled their points tally in the Division 4A league with a keenly contested win over St.Brides in Knockbridge. The match was a closely fought encounter from start to finish and was in the balance up to the final whistle. At half time the teams were on level par at 1-5 each. Entering the last five minutes the teams were still locked together and after passing up numerous scoring opportunities Cooley tagged on two very late points to get home on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-10.

Cooley lined out as follows: 1 Paul Byrne 2 Colin Marks 3 Antoin Watters 4 Peter Murphy 5 Frank Murphy 6 P.J.McGivern 7 Eddie Moley 8 Anthony White(0-1) 9 Ronan Woods 10 Cormac Watters(0-2) 11 Patrick Sheelan(1-3,1f) 12 Ciaran Sheelan(0-2) 13 Declan McGuinness(0-2) 14 Daryl Bailey(0-1) 15 Odran Thornton(0-1) Sub used David Thornton for O.Thornton.

Cooley v Geraldines PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 12 April 2010 00:28

Cooley Kickhams remain unbeaten in the Paddy Sheelan cup after inflicting a heavy defeat on the Geraldines in McGeough Park. The Gers opened smartly with the first two scores of the game and throughout the first half the game was evenly balanced. The half finished with the Gers leading on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-4 giving no indication of a second half collapse from them.

Cooley started the second half in whirlwind fashion and within 5 minutes they had tacked on 1-3 without reply. The goal certainly seemed to knock the heart out of this young Geraldines team as they failed to score for the remainder of the game. Indeed Cooley were to finish with a score of 1-15 with Gavin Long most impressive playing at wing forward and scoring 6 points from play. Conor McGuinness gave an accomplished performance at midfield and Richard Brennan covered a lot of ground although wearing the no 14.

Cooley lined out as follows: 1 Simon Dullaghan 2 Ross Dullaghan 3 John Kane 4 Antoin Watters 5 Frank Murphy 6 Alan Page 7 Eddie Moley 8 Keith White 9 Conor McGuinness(0-1) 10 Aoghain McGuinness 11 Patrick Sheelan(0-3,2f) 12 Gavin Long(0-6) 13 Conor Rafferty(1-3) 14 Richard Brennan 15 Sean McDonald(0-2f) Subs used Anthony White for K.White & P.J.McGivern for C.Rafferty.

Sheelan cup in Monasterboice
An entertaining game played at a bitterly cold Monasterboice ended with honours even. Kevin Levins refereed the match and allowed it to flow which added to the enjoyment for the spectators that braved the elements. The first half was tit for tat in the scoring department and indeed in the possession stakes as well with the difference being the well taken goal scored by Cooley's corner forward Sean McDonald. The half ended with the Kickhams leading on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-6. The second half continued in the same vein as the first with score for score and with the game entering its closing stages it looked like Cooley's first half major was going to remain the difference. However the Mairtin's best forward on view J.P. Rooney popped up on the end of a good team move to blast the ball to the back of the Cooley net and give his side a one point lead with 3 minutes remaining. This certainly seemd to be a winning score as the Kickhams applied pressure to no avail in search of an equaliser and the Mairtin's certainly passed up a gilt edged chance to put the match away when shooting wide. The Kickhams were not to be denied as Sean McDonald popped up with a fine and arguably the point of the match from play in injury time. On the resulting kick out the long whistle went and both teams would be happy to have annexed the draw. Keith White gave another fine display in midfield, although the Mairtins probably shaded it in this area. In defence Conor McGuinness was Cooley's best defender and up front Sean McDonald took the accolades ably assisted by Aoghain McGuinness.
Cooley lined out as follows: 1 Simon Dullaghan 2 Ross Dullaghan 3 John Kane 4 Antoin Watters 5 Alan Page(0-1) 6 Conor McGuinnes

7 Ambrose Kane 8 Keith White(0-2) 9 Anthony White 10 Cormac Watters 11 Patrick Sheelan(0-1f) 12 Aoghain McGuinness 13 Conor Rafferty(0-2) 14 Richard Brennan 15 Sean McDonald(1-4,3f) Subs used Frank Murphy for Cormac Watters 50min.
